cuppa? (2019) is a visually simplistic text work featuring black lettering that spells “do you want a cuppa?”. The lowercase lettering, as well as the use of the Australian / British colloquialism, “cuppa”, suggests a sense of casualness, despite the crisp, impersonal font. By placing this adhesive vinyl phrase on the wall slightly above eye level, it, as well as the context of the gallery space, infers that the text is worth considering and analysing. This sentence, however, is usually confined to domestic space, spoken amongst loved ones. The process of making someone a tea, or having a tea made for you, is inherently affectionate and comforting. “do you want a cuppa?” embodies the warm, content feeling of returning home and sitting down to have a cup of tea. The work aims to encourage the viewer to consider their own experience with this phrase, manifesting a comforting, nostalgic consideration of an often-overlooked, kind gesture.
