LANDEN CALLANDER
Square of Opposition
(2019)
Black adhesive vinyl
2.5m x 2.5 m

Square of Opposition (2019) consists of a black adhesive vinyl diagram featuring a centre square with text on each corner. This diagram, created by philosophers in response to Aristotle’s findings, serves to represent the relationships between the four basic categorical propositions. Instead of using mathematic variables as this diagram would usually present, Callander encourages the viewer to insert their own subject, giving the prompt word “comforting”. By placing their own thoughts, feelings, and memories into the diagram, it urges the viewer to consider their everyday within a categorised, formalised, analytical structure.
